BRI conducts the training program in seismology, earthquake engineering and tsunami disaster mitigation for scientists and engineers from developing countries to contribute to the enhancement of countermeasures for global earthquake and tsunami disaster risk reduction. The number of participants who completed the program has reached 1,664 from 99 countries (as of March 31, 2015).
Each participant in the One-year Training Course who obtains the required credits and submits a thesis is awarded a master’s degree certified by the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) since 2005. The Global Seismological Observation Course was launched for the purpose of training experts to establish and operate a global seismological observation network, which would be useful for monitoring underground nuclear tests as well as earthquakes in 1995. The Latin American Earthquake Engineering Course was launched for enhancement and dissemination of earthquake resistant technology for buildings in Latin American countries in 2014.
